Medjool, Ajwa or Sukkary: Which Dates Should You Stock?

Guide4 min readBy Tibra Foods

Three of the best-known Saudi varieties compared — taste, texture and the customers each one suits.

Medjool — the premium showpiece

Large, soft and richly caramel-like, Medjool is the variety most buyers picture when they think of a premium date. It suits gift boxes, upmarket retail and customers who eat dates as a treat. Its size and appearance make it easy to sell on the shelf.

Ajwa — tradition and meaning

Ajwa from Al-Madinah is dark, soft and gently sweet, and it holds a special place in Saudi and Islamic culture. It is a natural choice for gifting, for Ramadan, and for customers who value heritage and authenticity.

Sukkary — soft and very sweet

Sukkary, whose name means "sugary", is golden-brown, tender and sweet, and Al-Qassim is well known for it. It is popular for everyday eating and is a friendly first choice for people who are new to Saudi dates.

How to choose

If you sell mainly gifts, lead with Medjool and Ajwa. If you serve everyday shoppers, Sukkary offers great taste at an approachable level. Many buyers start with a mixed assortment, see which variety their customers reach for first, and then increase that line.
