Why We Break the Fast with Dates

Tradition3 min readBy Tibra Foods

The tradition behind the first bite of iftar, and why dates are such a natural way to end a long day of fasting.

A tradition of over fourteen centuries

It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to break his fast with fresh dates, with dry dates if fresh ones were not available, and with water if there were none. Muslims have followed this practice ever since.

Natural energy after a long day

Dates are rich in natural sugars such as glucose and fructose, so they give quick energy, and they also contain fibre and minerals such as potassium. Many people find them a light way to begin the meal.

Making iftar special

Serve dates with Arabic coffee or tea, stuff them with almonds or tahini, or offer a mix of varieties on the table. Gifting a box of premium dates is also a much-loved Ramadan gesture.
